47 – What I like best and least about America – 7 Sep 2019
Hey there. This is Maria from ENGLISH without fear. Today I’m going to tell you three things I like about America and three things I don’t like about America. So, sit back, relax, listen, and just try to understand as much as you can.
(intro: ENGLISH without fear where you can learn to speak English, naturally, through listening to stories)
Whether you live in one area or another, in one town or another, in one house or another, there are always things you like and don’t like about where you live. The same is true for me.
What do I like about America? Well, number one, I like that everybody is really friendly. What do I mean by people being friendly? Let me give you an example. When I go to the post office, I chat. I talk with the clerk. I don’t know her, but I ask her about her day:
- “Are you having a good day?”
- “What is going on in your life today?”
- “What do you like about your job here at the post office?”
- “How long have you worked at the post office?”
Most people like to respond. They like to answer those questions. People here in America are friendly.
When I’m out for a walk in my neighborhood, I’ll wave and say “Hi” and sometimes stop to chat with someone I don’t know. But that’s what I like about America. People are friendly. They are willing, they want to chat. They want to talk.
Number two, what’s the second thing I like about America?
The second thing I like about America is that you can go back to school, back to college, back to university at any time, no matter how old you are. That means that if you want to learn or study a new skill to get a different job, you can do that. You do not have to be young.
When I was about 32 years old, I went back to university to become a French and German teacher. I had already been at university for something else, but I wanted to do something different. That was normal. That is normal. It does not matter how old you are. I like that about America.
What’s number three? What is the third thing I like about America?
I like that I am free to go to church and worship Jesus and not be afraid. I don’t worry about the government putting me in jail. I don’t worry about somebody killing me. I don’t worry about persecution. I like the fact that I can go to church and worship Jesus and be free and everybody in America is free to worship whatever God they want to. That is a good thing.
What are the things, the aspects that I don’t like about my country, that I don’t like about America?
Number one, the first thing I don’t like about America is that everybody is rushing. Everybody’s in a hurry. They live by their watches and they rush, rush, rush. I don’t like that at all. It’s not good for the body. It’s not good for our health.
When I ask somebody: “How are you doing? How is life treating you?”, do you know what they say? They always say: “Oh, I am so busy!” That’s a stupid answer, I think.
I don’t like that we Americans don’t take time for our families. I don’t like that we eat our food in a hurry. I don’t like that most companies, most businesses give their workers just a few days of vacation. That is not good. I don’t like that about America.
What about the second thing, the second aspect that I like about America?
Number two, I don’t like that our country is so big.
Why don’t I like that? Because that means our family lives far, far away. For example, our two sons, each is married with children. Each of them lives 500 miles away from us. Mike’s brother and his wife, Steve, they live a thousand miles away from us. Mike’s mom, my mother-in-law, she lives at least 2000 miles away from us in Seattle. And our cousins, all our cousins live far, far away. I don’t like that. It makes it hard to visit and be with family.
What about number three? What’s the third thing I don’t like about America?
I don’t like that in America, we don’t teach a second language very well. In fact, kids in America start learning a second language, a foreign language, usually when they’re about 11, 12, 13 years old and then only for two, three, four years at the most. And usually one language. And they are not taught very well. They learn a bunch of rules, a bunch of grammar and they can’t speak the second language. I don’t like that about my country. I don’t like that about the schools.
In fact, a lot of Americans think that the world, the rest of the world, you all, that you all speak English and that you should speak English. So, we Americans don’t have to learn another language. That is crazy. I believe that when we learn another language we also learn about other people and other people are interesting. So, I think that is a bad idea that we have here in America.
Those are three things I like about my country and three things I don’t like about my country. Well, what about you? What do you like best about where you come from and what don’t you like? Tell me about that. Leave me some details below this video.
