Learn English – I stopped shaving my legs

Do you shave your legs or other places? Today, I talk about why I stopped. Hope this creates a lively discussion for you and those you know who are learning English.

Hey there, I’m experimenting with not shaving my legs. Why is that? And what do I think so far? I’ll tell you in a moment.

(Intro: English without Fear where you can learn to speak English naturally, through listening to stories.)

I am a red-head. So, the hair on my arms and on my legs is blonde. It’s not very visible. I first started shaving my legs when I was about 13 or 14 years old.  I asked my mom, “Mom, can I start shaving my legs?” And she said, “Why not?”

She was a ‘pretty chill’ mom. What does that mean, ‘pretty chill’? Chill means relaxed. Nothing’s a big deal. Well, some things, a lot of things were not a big deal. And when you say pretty like, ‘oh, that’s pretty interesting’ or ‘that’s pretty good’,  in that sense, pretty means ‘somewhat’. It’s not super good, super interesting. It’s not just a little bit interesting or a little bit good. It’s fairly good. It’s somewhat good. And my mom was pretty chill. She was fairly chill, especially about things like getting my ears pierced or shaving my legs.

At that time, I shaved my legs maybe once a week. But when I got to college, to university and lived in a dorm with other girls, I realized that a lot of them shaved their legs every single day. And they would do it in the shower.

I never picked up that habit, I never developed that habit. I continued to shave not every day, but in the summer, maybe every three or four days. And in the winter, at least once a week.  I did this for years. But recently, about two months ago, I decided I’m just going to stop shaving my legs.

At first, I was a bit self-conscious. What are  people gonna think? But what I have found is that nobody pays any attention. When I wear a skirt or shorts, now that it’s hot here in Alabama, nobody’s looking at my legs. Even my husband has not noticed. I haven’t told him, but he hasn’t noticed.

I don’t know if I’m going to keep this up forever, but for now it feels good to be a little bit rebellious, because most American women, most Western women, shave their legs and other places too.

I did look up on the internet about cultures, who, whose women don’t shave. And apparently, the Chinese women don’t shave their legs. They don’t shave anywhere. So, it’s got to be connected with culture. I bet there are other cultures that don’t shave their legs.

Well, tell me what you think. If you’re a gal, do you shave your legs? When did you start? And if you’re a guy, what do you think? Do you prefer gals who shave their legs or do you not care? Or maybe if you’re a guy, do you shave your legs? Because some men do.

Well, how’s that for a topic? Remember if you want the transcript or written words, just go to my website, www.englishwithoutfear.com. And there you’ll find this transcript of this episode, along with many others. I’m Maria from English without Fear. Talk to you next time.
