This is a whimsical story (‘Anything is possible in English class!’) I wrote for a beginning student who is 10 years old.
Hey there. I have a new friend, someone I met right here in Huntsville. Who is it? It’s Mickey Mouse. Yep. Let me tell you about my new friend, Mickey Mouse.
(Intro: English without Fear where you can learn to speak English naturally, through listening to stories)
Yes, that’s right. I have met Mickey Mouse, right here in Huntsville. You know who Mickey Mouse is? He and his girlfriend, Minnie Mouse, work at Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida. I know. I’ve been there. I’ve been to Disneyworld in Florida, and I have seen them. I have seen Mickey and his girlfriend Minnie.
But recently in March Disneyworld shut down. They closed their doors because of COVID.
Mickey has an aunt. He calls her Aunt Sue. I think she’s the older sister or somehow she is connected with Mickey’s mom. Or maybe she’s a…. just a good friend. Here in America, sometimes we call friends of the family who are older, sometimes we call them ‘Aunt’ or ‘Uncle’, if they’re close to the family.
Anyway, Aunt Sue, Sue is my neighbor. Sue lives here in my neighborhood, here in Huntsville, Alabama.
When Disneyworld closed down in March Minnie Mouse went to Texas to visit a friend. And Mickey Mouse came here to my friend Sue’s house. He came to visit Sue, his ‘Aunt Sue’.
One day, I was out walking, and I saw Sue walking with Mickey Mouse. I ran up to Sue and said, “Sue, is that Mickey Mouse walking with you?” Sue said, “Yep, sure is. Mickey Mouse, here’s my friend Maria. Maria, meet Mickey Mouse. Mickey is staying with me until Disneyworld opens back up.”
Wow! I was so excited to actually get to talk to Mickey Mouse. So every day, since I like to walk and since Sue and Mickey like to walk, every day, I’ve been walking in the neighborhood with Mickey Mouse and Sue. That’s right, we walk every day.
How long do we walk? We walk 43 minutes and 28 seconds. Forty-three minutes and twenty-eight seconds? That’s strange. Why 43 minutes and 28 seconds? That is because my friend Sue has other things she has to do every day. But I am happy with the walk of 43 minutes and 28 seconds, so I can walk and talk with Mickey.
Mickey Mouse has been telling me about all sorts of adventures he and Minnie Mouse, his girlfriend, have had at Disneyworld. They have met many, many famous people.
Like…… I don’t know….. like the President of France….. or ……famous movie stars like Brad Pitt…… or…… musical artists like……. Frank Sinatra, a long time ago. I’m not a musical person. I watch some movies.
Oh, but I do read books! And the gal, the lady, who wrote the Harry Potter series came to Disneyworld and he got to talk with her – JK Rowling.
Yes, Mickey Mouse has met and talked with JK Rowling. I love the Harry Potter books!
Well, unfortunately, Mickey Mouse left this weekend. He left Sue’s house. He left Huntsville, Alabama. He left my neighborhood to go back down to Florida because today, Monday, Disneyworld is opening back up. At least that’s what I hear.
So, that’s my story about how I got to meet Mickey Mouse. I didn’t get to meet Minnie Mouse, but maybe next time.
What about you? Have you ever met someone really famous? Tell me about it. Leave me a comment below this video. And remember if you would like to read about my getting to know Mickey Mouse, the transcript will be available soon. Well, that’s it for this episode. I’m Maria from English without Fear. Talk to you next time.
